At Buhach Colony High School in Atwater, California, he participated in baseball. He was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 20th round of the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft after high school, but he declined to sign and instead decided to play college baseball at California State University.
He participated in the Hyannis Harbor Hawks of the Cape Cod Baseball League throughout his undergraduate years. After graduating, the Tampa Bay Rays selected him once more in the 13th round of the 2012 MLB Draft. He joined them and played for the Hudson Valley Renegades in his first season as a professional.
He was given the Double-A Montgomery Biscuits to pitch for in the 2014 minor league season. He played the entire 2015 season for the Triple-A Durham Bulls. He was promoted to the main leagues by the Rays in July 2016, and on July 7, 2016, he played in his first MLB game for the team against the Los Angeles Angels.
In August 2017, the Los Angeles Dodgers claimed him off waivers, and the Miami Marlins later acquired his contract.
