At the University of Houston, he played football in college. In the sixth round of the 2016 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots selected him.

His primary position on defense is linebacker, but Roberts started to play fullback during the 2019 season when the Patriots were without a fullback on the roster due to injuries.



Roberts and the Miami Dolphins agreed to a one-year, $2 million contract on March 24, 2020, which also included a $1 million signing bonus. Roberts and Brian Flores, the Dolphins’ head coach and former linebackers coach for the New England Patriots, were reunited as a result of the signing.

Kyle Van Noy and Kamu Grugier-Hill, two former Patriots linebackers, were also reunited with Roberts. He was selected as Jerome Baker’s starting inside linebacker partner.

Roberts was added to the reserve injury list on December 31, 2020. He made 61 tackles, 1.5 sacks, one forced fumble, one recovered fumble, and 11 starts over the course of his 13 games played.

On March 24, 2021, Roberts extended his contract with the Dolphins. A career-high 83 tackles, one sack, four passes defended, two forced fumbles, and an interception was recorded him in 2021 after he was appointed the starting linebacker. He participated in all 17 games with 15 starts that season.

Roberts reaffirmed his contract with the Dolphins on March 18, 2022.
