The San Diego Padres picked Lauer in the first round of the 2016 MLB draft, with the 25th overall pick. He received a $2 million signing bonus when he joined the Padres.

Lauer began his professional career with the Rookie-level Arizona Padres before being promoted to the Class A-Short Season Northwest League’s Tri-City Dust Devils and the Class A Midwest League’s Fort Wayne TinCaps.

His 2016 season ended with a 1–1 record and a 2.03 ERA. In 31 innings pitched, he also had 37 strikeouts.

The Lake Elsinore Storm of the Class A-Advanced California League is where Lauer started the 2017 season.

In July, he was promoted to the San Antonio Missions of the Class AA Texas League after posting a 2–5 record and a 2.79 ERA in 67+23 innings with 84 strikeouts.

He was 4–3 with a 3.93 ERA in nine games (nine starts) for the Missions. The El Paso Chihuahuas of the Class AAA Pacific Coast League is where Lauer started the 2018 season.

On April 24, 2018, Lauer was promoted to the main leagues. On the same day, he made his major league debut, pitching three innings against the Colorado Rockies, allowing six earned runs on six hits and four walks.

He went 6-7 with a 4.34 ERA in 23 starts for the Padres, striking out 100 batters in 112 innings. With ten pickoffs, he led the major leagues in pickoffs, while allowing only five stolen bases and two caught stealing.
