Eric was born on June 3, 1995, in Elyria, Ohio in the USA. He played baseball at Midview High School in Grafton, Ohio, where he happened to be a student. Whiles in high school, he took college courses at Lorain County Community College.
In high school, Eric played as a pitcher and first baseman for the team. After school, he enrolled at Kent State University where he played college baseball for the school. Before getting into college, the Toronto Blue Jays selected him in the 17th round of the 2013 MLB draft but he did not sign with them and chose college baseball.
During the 2016 MLB draft, the San Diego Padres selected him in the first round of the 2016 MLB draft. He signed with the Padres and was given a signing bonus of $2 million. He made his professional debut that season playing with the Arizona Padres of the Rookie-level Arizona League.
Due to his skills and great performance, he got promoted to play with the Tri-City Dust Devils of the Class A-Short Season Northwest League and the Fort Wayne TinCaps of the Class A Midwest League. In November 2019, the Padres traded him to the Milwaukee Brewers where he currently plays today.
