He went to Columbus High School and played football there as a running back, wide receiver, and cornerback. He was a powerful kick returner as well, averaging 30 yards per return in his final year.
At Wake Forest University, he participated in collegiate football for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons football team. He got to play in every game as a true freshman in a reserve position. He accumulated 66 tackles and three interceptions while leading the team in snaps played as a sophomore. He was selected to the second team of the ACC for his junior campaign.
Bassey signed with the Denver Broncos in April 2020 as a free agent after going undrafted. On a pass thrown in Week 12 against the New Orleans Saints, he made his first career interception. In September 2021, he was put on the PUP/reserve list, where he spent the first several months of the season. After being turned on in November 2021, he was let go in December. He was later claimed off of waivers by the Los Angeles Chargers.
He was released on January 8, 2022, and the Denver Broncos later that day (January 10), claimed him off waivers. On September 1, 2022, after being discharged, he was added back to the practice squad. His promotion to the active roster occurred on September 14, 2022.
