Cornerback Essang Bassey represents the Denver Broncos in the National Football League. He is 1.78 m tall and 86 kg. He attended Columbus High School, where he spent his high school football career as a cornerback, wide receiver, and running back. He was a strong kick returner as well, averaging 30 yards per return during his senior year.
He played collegiate football for the Demon Deacons as a student at Wake Forest University. As a true freshman and reserve, he participated in every game. As a sophomore, he recorded the most playing time on the team, 66 tackles, three interceptions, and three touchdowns (66). He was named to the second team of the ACC during his junior season.
Bassey signed a contract with the Denver Broncos in April 2020 as an undrafted free agent. Against the New Orleans Saints in Week 12, he made his first career interception off a thrown pass. In September 2021, he was placed on the reserve/PUP list to start the season. He was activated in November, and in December 2021, he was released. The Los Angeles Chargers took him off waivers that same month.
He was released on January 8, 2022, and the Denver Broncos later picked him up off waivers on January 10, 2022. He was released and later re-signed to the practice squad on September 1, 2022. He was elevated to the list of the active players on September 14, 2022.
