Essang Bassey is a cornerback with the National Football League’s Denver Broncos in American football. At Columbus High School, he played high school football as an amateur. He alternated between playing cornerback, wide receiver, and running back there. During his senior season, he averaged 30 yards per kickoff return, making him an explosive kick returner as well.

He decided to go to Wake Forest University after high school, where he played college football for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons squad. In every game of his true freshman season, he was used as a reserve and saw playing time, recording 17 tackles. He played the most defensive snaps for the team as a sophomore, compiling 66 tackles and three interceptions.

He was chosen second-team All-ACC during his junior season after evaluators cited his speed and skill as strengths of his game. On April 25, 2020, Bassey agreed to terms with the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent. Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals, who both attempted to sign him, were passed over in favor of the Broncos. He began the season on the reserve/PUP list on September 1, 2021, and was activated on November 13.
