In high school,  Franks was rated as the fifth-highest ranked pro-style quarterback and the 54th-highest ranked prospect overall in the 247Sports Composite.

All of the major recruiting services rated Franks as a four-star prospect.   On June 1, 2014, he made his first pledge to play college football at Louisiana State University (LSU), but on November 29, 2015, he changed his commitment to the University of Florida.

Franks joined the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted free agent on May 3, 2021, after signing a contract with the team. Frank will serve as the backup quarterback for the third string behind the incumbent starter Matt Ryan and the second string backup Josh Rosen.

Frank saw a taste of the NFL when the Falcons played the New England Patriots in Week 11. His first pass was picked off by safety Adrian Phillips, bringing the game’s final score of the 0–25 loss to a close.
