The summer before his senior year, he competed for the 18U National Team, which won the World Cup. Whitley pitched a no-hitter with 14 strikeouts in a single game during his senior year.
Whitley was chosen by the Houston Astros with the 17th overall pick in the first round of the 2016 Major League Baseball draft. He had made a commitment to play collegiate baseball at Florida State University, but he ultimately chose to sign with the Astros.
On July 13, 2016, he was assigned to the Gulf Coast Astros of the Gulf Coast League’s Rookie Division and eventually promoted to the Greeneville Astros.
Whitley received a 50-game ban on February 21, 2018, after he broke MLB’s drug prevention and treatment program. He was given a spring training invitation by the Astros in 2019, and he started the 2019 campaign with the Round Rock Express of the Class AAA Pacific Coast League.
After the season, he was selected to represent the Peoria Javelinas in the Arizona Fall League. After the 2020 season, the Astros added Whitley to their 40-man roster. Whitley would have Tommy John surgery on March 10, 2021, and would consequently miss the 2021 season.
