The Milwaukee Brewers selected first baseman Garrett Cooper from Auburn in the sixth round of the amateur draft in 2013. In 48 games, he hit .283/.350/.467 in his rookie season, splitting time between the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and the Helena Brewers.

His 2014 campaign was cut short to 67 games and was split between three teams: the Brevard County Manatees of the Florida State League, the Wisconsin Badgers (who were all on rehabilitation assignments), and the AZL Brewers.

In 53 games with Brevard County, he batted .238/.330/.341. In 119 games with the Manatees in 2015, he improved to .294/.356/.436 and was later promoted to the AA Biloxi Shuckers, where he hit .552 in 9 games.

He participated in 36 AAA games with the Colorado Springs SkySox and 92 games at Biloxi in 2016. His combined batting line over 128 games was .292/.344/.423, with 9 home runs and 69 RBI.

He had a fantastic first half with Colorado Springs in 2017. He slugged 29 doubles, and 17 home runs, and drove in 82 runs in 75 games while hitting .366 to take advantage of the favorable conditions.

With the club performing well and already having two solid first basemen in Eric Thames and Jesus Aguilar, there was no room at the inn in Milwaukee.

Garrett was therefore exchanged for pitcher Tyler Webb by the New York Yankees on July 13. In his new club, things were very different.

The Yankees had recently promoted Ji-Man Choi and released veteran Chris Carter, while two other first basemen, Greg Bird and Tyler Austin, were out with injuries. As a result, Garrett probably had the chance to show his mettle.
