Gary Sánchez Herrera is a Dominican professional baseball catcher for the Minnesota Twins of Major League Baseball. In 2015, he made his Major League Baseball debut with the New York Yankees. In August 2016, he was selected Rookie of the Month and Player of the Month by the American League.
He was born on December 2, 1992, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic Sánchez grew up in the Dominican Republic’s La Victoria.
His parents divorced while he was a child, and his mother, Orquidia Herrera, and her mother, Agustina Pena, reared him, his three brothers, and one sister.
Sánchez signed as an international free agent with the New York Yankees in July 2009, getting a $3 million signing bonus. He made his professional debut with the Gulf Coast Yankees. Despite playing in only 53 games, Sánchez had a record-breaking rookie debut in 2016, ranking second in Rookie of the Year voting.
Baseball America listed him as the Yankees’ seventh-best prospect prior to the 2010 season. On August 18, 2010, he was upgraded to the Staten Island Yankees of the New York–Penn League’s Class A-Short Season. In 47 games, he hit.329/.393/.543, including eight home runs and 43 runs batted in (RBIs).
Sánchez was traded to the Minnesota Twins on March 13, 2022, along with Gio Urshela, for Josh Donaldson, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, and Ben Rortved.
