According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, George Kirby, a former top pitcher at Rye High School, has been called up to the majors and will start Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Kirby completed Rye High School in 2016 with a varsity career that was praised and rewarded with numerous awards.

He was a three-time all-state selection (two times first-team) and led the Garnets to a Section 1 championship in his sophomore season.

In his junior and senior seasons, he was unbeaten, and in his final high school season, he went 6-0 with a 0.32 ERA, 0.81 WHIP, and 73 strikeouts.

In December 2019, he was named to the Journal News/lohud.com All-Decade Team.

Kirby was picked 20th overall in the first round of the 2018 MLB Draft by the Mariners after three great seasons at Elon University.

Kirby arrived with a strong fastball that only improved as he went through a major-league training routine (including getting hashtag-yoked at Gas Camp).

His fast slider, which scouts praised during his draft year, was his other most-used pitch.
