In July 2016, Carrillo, who was then 17 years old and played for Tijuana in the Mexican League, was discovered by the Dodgers and signed for just $75,000.
In his first two seasons at the lower levels, he became well-known, but in 2019 he had opposition at Class A Advanced Rancho Cucamonga (5.44 ERA, 51 walks in 86 innings).
Carrillo rebounded back nicely in the Arizona Fall League that autumn, thanks in part to a late injury.
