In July 2016, Carrillo, who was then 17 years old and played for Tijuana in the Mexican League, was discovered by the Dodgers and signed for just $75,000.

In his first two seasons at the lower levels, he became well-known, but in 2019 he had opposition at Class A Advanced Rancho Cucamonga (5.44 ERA, 51 walks in 86 innings).

He was acquired by the Nationals in the Trea Turner-Max Scherzer trade last July and concluded 2021 with a 4.76 ERA, 101 strikeouts, and 50 walks in 96 1/3 innings across two Double-A teams.

Carrillo has improved over the past three years despite his 5-foot-10 height and noticeable effort in his delivery.
