He pitched for the VSL Rays that year, finishing 0-2, 6.82 in 15 games, including six starts. In 2013, he was traded to the Appalachian League’s Princeton Rays, where his record improved to 2-5, 4.05 in 12 starts.

He only gave up 46 hits in 53 1/3 innings, but he battled with control, having a K/W ratio of 38/20. In 2014, he was promoted to the Midwest League’s Bowling Green Hot Rods.

His record was 5-7 with a 3.21 ERA, and he improved his K/W ratio to 95/29 in 98 innings. In 2015, he played for the Florida State League’s Charlotte Stone Crabs.

While his record was only 7-13, his ERA was a respectable 3.56, and he pitched a career-high 139 innings in 26 games, striking out 104 batters while walking only 29.

On January 28, 2016, he was part of a major league deal that sent him to the Colorado Rockies alongside reliever Jake McGee in exchange for OF Corey Dickerson and 3B Kevin Padlo.

After pitching 9-6 with a 2.85 ERA in 21 games for the AA Eastern League’s Hartford Yard Goats, he was voted Eastern League Pitcher of the Year.

That September, he made his major league debut with the Rockies, going 1-1 with a 5.23 ERA.
