Butker played football as a rising sophomore while attending The Westminster Schools, where he picked up the sport.

He broke the previous school record for a field goal by 53 yards. He was a three-sport athlete who competed in basketball, football, and soccer. He won three soccer state championships. He also spent all four years playing tuba in the school’s upperclassman symphonic band in the first chair.



In the seventh round of the 2017 NFL Draft, the Carolina Panthers selected Butker with the 233rd overall pick. In 2017, he was selected as the third and final kicker.

On May 5, 2017, Butker and the Panthers reached an agreement on a four-year, $2.48 million contract that also included a $83,112 signing bonus. He was discharged on September 14, 2017, and the practice squad later that day.

Butker tested positive for COVID-19 on December 20, 2021, and was then added to the Reserve/COVID-19 list. He was unable to attend the Chiefs’ Week 16 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers because of COVID-19 regulations in the NFL.

He missed the game for the first time in his career. His activation took place on December 29, 2021. Butker played in 16 games during the 2021 season, making 47 of 49 extra point attempts and 25 of 28 field goal tries.
