The Chicago Bears are a professional American football team based in Chicago. The Bears compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) North division.
Sid Luckman, the quarterback for the Chicago Bears, led the team to victory in four of the five National Football League Championship Games that they participated in between the years 1940 and 1947.
The team was given the nickname “Monsters of the Midway” which had previously been used by the University of Chicago. They also received the now-famous wishbone “C” that is worn on their helmets, as well as a newly written theme song that referred to them as “The Pride and Joy of Illinois.”
The team’s 73–0 triumph over the much favored Washington Redskins at Griffith Stadium in the 1940 NFL Championship Game is one of their most well-known victories from this time period; the score is still an NFL record for the most lopsided win ever achieved by a team.
The introduction of a new offensive formation by Halas was the key factor in the one-sided outcome that was achieved.
