The team was established as the Portsmouth Spartans in Portsmouth, Ohio, and it entered the NFL on July 12, 1930. In 1934, the franchise was moved to Detroit due of financial difficulties. Prior to the Super Bowl era, the Lions won four NFL Championship Games between 1935 and 1957. The franchise has the longest postseason winless streak in the league, having not won a playoff game since the 1957 title. They are the only franchise in existence throughout the entire Super Bowl era that hasn’t played in the big game.



The Lions made their decision to incorporate official cheerleaders into the team official on June 13, 2016. Rebecca Girard-Smoker, who was formerly in charge of the Detroit Pistons dance team, was also named as the cheerleading squad’s coach by the organization.

The Lions have had several rivals since it was established in 1930. The Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers have been their oldest rivals.
