He was raised in Exeter, which is where he was born. He spent a year at Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, Massachusetts, after graduating from Exeter High School, where he played football as a student.

In high school, he played defensive end and tight end. He grabbed in 30 catches for 508 yards as a senior, along with two touchdowns and seven sacks.
