Hyun-jin Ryu is a professional baseball pitcher from South Korea who now pitches for the Toronto Blue Jays of Major League Baseball. He formerly played for the Los Angeles Dodgers in MLB and the Hanwha Eagles in the KBO League.

He became the first player from the KBO to join an MLB team via the posting system in 2013, after seven seasons with the Eagles.

Ryu is the first Korean pitcher to take the mound in the World Series. Ryu was named to his first career Major League Baseball All-Star Game in 2019.

He led the Majors in earned run average (ERA) during that season, with a 1.26 ERA through his first 14 starts, the lowest by a Dodgers pitcher since the metric was introduced in 1912.

Ryu was born on March 25, 1987, in Incheon, South Korea, and attended Dongsan High School there. In Daejeon University, he is pursuing a master’s degree in community physical education.

Ryu began to pitch with his left hand when his father purchased him a lefthander’s glove that fits on the right hand when he was ten years old.

Ryu had Tommy John surgery in 2004 and did not throw in any official games. He led his team to the Blue Dragon Open National High School Championship in 2005, tossing 22 shutout innings as the club’s ace and hitting .389 in the competition.

He won the award for Best Pitcher. Ryu was named to the South Korean national junior squad in 2005, which finished second in the 6th Asian Junior Baseball Championship in Seoul, South Korea.

Ryu started the semifinal game against Chinese Taipei and pitched six innings, striking out 10 batters and allowing only one unearned run on four hits.

He tossed 8+3 innings with 14 strikeouts and gave up an unearned run on five hits in three games during the competition (one start)
