He played both offense and defense on the football team at Hinsdale Central High School. In addition to making 12 tackles and two sacks on defense, he recorded a total of 27 pass receptions for 583 yards and four touchdowns on offense.

He signed a letter of intent to play collegiate football for the Michigan Wolverines at the University of Michigan after completing high school. After sitting out the 2014 season, he made five catches as a freshman in 2015. Despite having five catches once more in 2016, as a junior in 2017, he only had one.

His time with the Michigan Wolverines included 34 games until he transferred to the University of California. He continued playing football at the University of California’s California Golden Bears, appearing in 13 games—four of which he started—and making four starts. Bunting was subsequently signed by the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent after going undrafted in the 2019 NFL Draft.

He joined the practice squad the same month he signed with the New York Jets. In January 2021, the Arizona Cardinals and he agreed to a futures contract. Bunting joined the Dallas Cowboys supplemental roster in September 2021. On August 15, 2022, he was injured and put on injured reserve after being waived.
