The Jets signed Irvin Charles, a wide receiver from Division II IUP, as a big investment in the undrafted free agency pool after the 2022 NFL draft to bolster their depth at wide receiver. He started his collegiate playing career with a Power 5 team and was able to make an impact from time to time.
Irvin’s desire for a larger role eventually led him to IUP and to a season in which he caught the attention of New York as a potential undrafted free agent. Charles, a native of South Jersey, played high school football at Paul VI High School while he was in high school.
As a senior, Charles was recognized as an all-state performer and was considered to be one of the top prospects in the state of New Jersey for the class of 2015. In addition, he hauled in 49 catches for 848 yards and 11 touchdowns during his junior season.
After graduating from Paul VI, Charles received scholarship offers from a number of schools, including Alabama, Florida, Miami, Ohio State, and Penn State. Charles, who was ranked as the No. 26 wide receiver in the class of 2015 and was a four-star prospect, ultimately made the decision to enroll at Penn State.
