Charles was raised in South Jersey and attended Paul VI, where he was on the football team. During his senior year, Charles was recognized as one of New Jersey’s top players and was named to the all-state team. As a junior, he had 49 receptions for 848 yards and 11 scores.
While still a high school senior, Charles received scholarship offers from several major universities, including Alabama, Florida, Miami, Ohio State, and Penn State. Charles, a four-star prospect and the No. 26 wide receiver in the class of 2015 according to 247Sports, finally made a commitment to Penn State.
As a redshirt freshman, Charles played in seven games and had two receptions, the best of which was for a touchdown. The first pass Charles caught as a college freshman went for 80 yards and a score in a game against the Gophers. With the game-changing score in hand, Penn State moved on to victory.
Although Charles spent three years at Penn State, he was mostly a member of the special teams and only caught three catches for 110 yards and a touchdown. During his two-year career (2016-2017), Charles participated in 25 games, making 13 tackles and forcing a fumble on kickoff and punt return coverage. The Big Ten game against Indiana was when Charles forced the fumble.
Following his redshirt sophomore season at Penn State in 2019, Charles decided to transfer to IUP in order to expand his role in the passing game. Due to academic challenges and the COVID-19 pandemic, he did not enter the field until 2021. As a senior, Charles caught 39 passes for 791 yards and 12 touchdowns for IUP, making the most of his only year in a Panthers uniform.
