The San Diego Padres selected him in the second round of the Major League Baseball draft in 2011 out of JSerra Catholic High School in San Juan Capistrano, California, and that marked the beginning of his career as a professional baseball player. He signed a $3 million contract with the Padres despite being committed to UCLA.
Hedges, Josh Naylor, Cal Quantrill, and the minor leaguers Joey Cantillo, Owen Miller, and Gabriel Arias were all traded by the Padres to the Cleveland Indians on August 31, 2020 in exchange for Mike Clevinger, Greg Allen, and Matt Waldron.
