As a collegiate football player, he suited up for Vanderbilt. Hayward was taken by the Green Bay Packers in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft after spending the previous five seasons with the San Diego/Los
Angels Chargers. Hayward tri-starred in three sports while attending Perry High School in Georgia. He led his team to the state quarterfinals as a senior by throwing for 1,300 yards and 18 touchdowns and rushing for 1,284 yards and 18 touchdowns.

Casey and Tish Hayward, his parents, raised him in Perry, Georgia, where they now live. His mother, Tish, died of breast cancer in July of 2016, and his younger brother, Jecavesia, died on November 27, 2017.
