Frankie Montas is a Dominican professional baseball pitcher for the Oakland Athletics of Major League Baseball (MLB). He previously played in MLB for the Chicago White Sox.
Montas started the 2014 season in the Class A-Advanced Carolina League with the Winston-Salem Dash. He was selected to participate in the All-Star Futures Game in 2014, but he ended up hurting the meniscus in his knee, which meant he needed surgery. As a result, he had to withdraw from the competition.
Following his recovery, Montas pitched for the Birmingham Barons of the Southern League Class AA after joining the team. At the end of the 2014 campaign, he finished with a combined win-loss record of 5-0 and an earned run average of 1.44.
After the conclusion of the 2014 season, the White Sox sent Montas to play in the Arizona Fall League. The White Sox included Montas on their 40-man roster on November 20, 2014, after having previously not included him.
During his first spring training with a major league team, Montas threw his fastball at a speed ranging from 98 to 100 miles per hour (158 to 161 kilometers per hour).
In the 2015 season, he played for Birmingham again, and on June 9, he pitched a no-hitter that lasted for seven innings. Both the Southern League All-Star Game and the All-Star Futures Game had him as a participant.
On July 17, 2015, the White Sox called up Montas to play in the major leagues so that they could use him as their 26th man for the doubleheader that day.
