Richards was forced to leave a game against the Seattle Mariners on July 10 because of a right forearm injury. His throwing elbow’s ulnar collateral ligament was torn, as verified by an MRI the following day.

His 2018 season was cut short by Tommy John surgery, and he will be less ready for the 2019 season. He finished the season with a 5–4 record and a 3.66 ERA while leading the American League in wild pitches (15).



Richards signed a two-year deal with the Padres on December 7, 2018.

On September 16, 2019, he made his Padres debut. Richards made three starts for the 2019 Padres, going 0-1 with an 8.31 ERA in those appearances.

A starter for the first half of 2020, he was shifted to the bullpen and finished with a 2.22 record in 10 starts and a 4.03 ERA in 14 games.

During the postseason, he made four appearances for the bullpen and allowed two runs in 2+23 innings. On October 28, 2020, Richards became a free agent.
