McCuMcCullers graduated from the Jesuit High School in Tampa, Florida. He was named the Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year for 2012 baseball.

McCullers was chosen by the Houston Astros with the 41st overall pick in the first round of the 2012 Major League Baseball (MLB) draft.
He received a $2.5 million bonus when he joined the Astros.

In 2013, McCullers won the Midwest League championship while pitching for the Class A Quad Cities River Bandits.

McCullers made his major league debut against the Oakland Athletics, pitching 4+2/3 innings, giving up one run, three walks, three hits, and five strikeouts while recording a no-decision. On June 3, 2015, McCullers faced the Baltimore Orioles and threw his first complete game of his career.

He changed one of his pitches for the 2021 season to a sweeping slider. McCullers missed the start of the 2022 season as he was unable to throw in spring training as he was still recuperating from the forearm issue.
