Romo was born to Mexican parents in Brawley, California. He was a lifelong Los Angeles Dodgers supporter. Both his father and grandpa were baseball players, and his grandfather belonged to the Mexico City Diablos Rojos.

Frank who is his dad and a semi-pro baseball player, was unable to play in Minor League Baseball due to work obligations, and he wanted to ensure that his son had the same opportunity.

He taught Sergio how to throw and built him a pitching mound in the backyard. Romo graduated in 2001 from Brawley Union High School where he played shortstop and third base for the baseball team.

Romo was on the verge of signing enlistment papers to join his father in the US Navy after receiving no scholarship offers from four-year institutions. Instead, he decided to play baseball at a junior college.

Before moving to Arizona Western College, Romo attended Orange Coast College.

In 2002 and 2003, Romo was selected for the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference’s second team All-Region I team. Romo amassed a 16-4 overall record and a 2.79 earned run average in 159 innings (ERA).

Romo participated in NCAA Division II baseball throughout his junior and senior years at the University of North Alabama (2004) and Mesa State College (2005).

He was 10-3 with a 3.69 ERA in 97.1 innings while playing for North Alabama in 2004 and was selected First-Team All-Gulf South Conference. He was the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference’s Pitcher of the Year for Mesa State in his final season.
