The Guardians designated seven players for assignment on Friday in order to add 11 players to their 40-man roster and avoid the Rule 5 draft.

Mejia, 25, was one of seven players designated for assignment. In 2021, he made his major-league debut, going 1-7 with an 8.25 ERA in 17 appearances.

Looking at Mejia’s splits, however, it’s easy to see why the president of baseball operations David Stearns believes he’ll be used more as a reliever in the spring.

Mejia went 0-7 with a 9.78 ERA and a 1.795 WHIP in 11 starts. He was 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA and 0.800 WHIP in six appearances out of the bullpen.

Mejia, a Dominican Republic native who was signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2013, is predominantly a fastball/slider pitcher with a sinker that has been effective in inducing groundballs.

He also throws a changeup and a curve, but if deployed entirely out of the pen, he may rely on the sinker/slider combination.

Mejia has a 19-20 record in 109 games in the minors, including 31 starts, with a 3.12 ERA, 16 saves, and a 1.111 WHIP. He walked 2.6 batters per nine innings and struck out 8.7 batters.

Mejia, who stands 6-foot-5 and weighs 240 pounds, was given a fourth option and so has one left, which means he may be moved to the minors without having to clear waivers next year, which is another reason the Brewers were willing to commit a 40-man roster spot to him.

That roster now has 37 players on it.
