Major League Baseball confirmed Tuesday that pitcher J.C. Meja is the second member of the Milwaukee Brewers to be suspended for 80 games after testing positive for a banned drug.

According to the league, Meja tested positive for Stanozolol. Right-handed pitcher Trevor Kelley will take Meja’s place on the Brewers’ roster.

The Brewers acquired the 25-year-old Meja in a November trade with the Cleveland Guardians for an undisclosed player, with minor leaguer David Fry being sent to Cleveland to finalize the deal on March 13.

Meja has pitched in two games with the Brewers, but both times he struggled, allowing six runs in just 2.1 innings of work, walking five hitters and striking out only one.

He pitched the final inning of the Brewers’ 9-3 loss to the Marlins on Saturday in Miami.

Kelley is a 29-year-old right-handed reliever who last pitched in the Major Leagues for the Philadelphia Phillies in 2020, when he pitched in four games.

So far this season, he’s pitched in 13 games for Triple-A Nashville, posting a 0.69 ERA while striking out 17 batters and walking only four. For the Sounds, he also made two saves.
