The Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod Baseball League was where Matijevic played collegiate summer baseball in 2015 and 2016. In 2015, he was selected as a league all-star.

Matijevic was drafted by the Houston Astros with the 75th overall pick in the 2017 MLB Draft. His professional career was launched with the Tri-City ValleyCats of the Class A-Short Season New York-Penn League after signing with the Astros and receiving a $700,000 signing bonus.

He was promoted by the Astros to the Buies Creek Astros of Class A Advanced Carolina League in May.  He hit.277/.350/.538 with 22 home runs and 62 RBIs in 101 games for both teams.

In the Class AA Texas League, he began the year with the Corpus Christi Hooks.

In 2022, the Astros called Matijevic to Spring Training. He was sent to Triple-A Sugar Land, who had changed their name to the Sugar Land Space Cowboys, after failing to make the club at the start of the season.
