After graduating from high school, he was given the opportunity to accept a football scholarship from North Dakota State University.

He departed after three seasons to enroll at Louisiana State University as a graduate transfer. He continued playing football for the LSU Tigers at Louisiana State. In that year, he finished third on the team with 58 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, one sack, one forced fumble, eight pass breakups, and three interceptions. Cox was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
