Jacob Barnes’ most meaningful Father’s Day will be a long-distance affair.
Jacob Barnes will pitch for the Brewers at Dodger Stadium today, but his heart will be pulled east to Mississippi by his newborn daughter, and to Florida by his family, which is still grieving the loss of his father.
Barnes, on the other hand, is rekindling his bond with his biological father.
At the start of Spring Training, Barnes’ stepfather, Ray, was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer, which had gone to his brain, according to Barnes. At the end of April, he passed away.

Ray survived on therapy and occasional pain medication since surgery was deemed too hazardous. His illness worsened during the course of his life, limiting his mobility in recent years.
Barnes’ mother was also injured at work, requiring emergency surgery and limiting her mobility. According to Barnes, Ray did his best to keep the family afloat.
