He completed Santa Fe Christian High School. After graduating from high school, he played collegiate football for the Stanford Cardinal football team at Stanford University. He once recorded an 84-yard punt, the longest in Stanford history.
Over the course of four years, he punted 185 times, averaging 43.8 yards per attempt to lead the team in punt average. He got three All-Pac-12 distinctions in total, including two honorable mentions for Pac-12 All-Academic recognition.
