After signing an undrafted free agent contract with the New England Patriots on April 30, Jake Julien is the next Eagles player to receive a shot in the NFL.
The 11th grader who had switched from soccer to football took a chance in 2021 by returning to Eastern Michigan for his graduation senior season. He received an extra year of eligibility because the COVID-19 epidemic caused the 2020 season to be reduced to six games.
The Ottawa RedBlacks selected the Barrie, Ontario native with the 31st overall pick in the fourth round of the 2021 CFL Draft. After being selected, he decided to stay at Ypsilanti for the 2021 season in an effort to improve his chances of playing in the NFL.
Julien began the season on the Ray Guy award watch list in addition to being selected to the fourth-team preseason All-American and first-team preseason All-Mid-American conference by Phil Steele’s College Football Preview.
Julien had a strong last season with the Eagles, receiving a second-team All-Mid-American pick despite not making the first-team All-MAC squad after 51 punts went for 2,343 yards.
In fair receptions (17), punts over 50 yards (14), and longest punt, he set career highs (average yards per punt of 45.9).
In addition to being selected for the 2021 team, Julien was also selected for the All-MAC squad in 2018. He received a total of seven honors for being the MAC-West Division’s special teams player of the week.
He was selected to compete in the January 8–12 College Gridiron Showcase thanks to his success at Eastern Michigan.
