Jake Matthews is an American football offensive tackle for the Atlanta Falcons of the National Football League (NFL).
He was drafted by the Falcons sixth overall in the 2014 NFL Draft. He played college football at Texas A&M. He is a member of the Matthews family of football players.
Jake Matthews has signed a three-year contract extension with the Falcons.
With two years remaining on his previous contract, Matthews carried the third-highest cap burden on the team this summer (below Matt Ryan and Grady Jarrett).
The 2018 Pro Bowl pick has been a reliable and effective blind-side protector for Ryan and the Falcons offense for many years.
Matthews, now 30 years old, holds the NFL record for the longest ongoing streak of starts by an offensive lineman, and the fourth-longest stretch by any position in franchise history, with 127 straight games started at left tackle dating back to his rookie season.
For the 2021 season, the linemen continued to perform admirably, earning a 71.3 overall offensive grade and a 77.2 pass blocking grade from Pro Football Focus. Matthews had a relatively quiet 2021, with just three sacks to his name.
From what we’ve heard, the Atlanta coaching staff highly valued Matthews and wanted to keep him around for a lot longer than his previous contract allowed. Before its scheduled renewal in 2024, that initial contract was set to end after the 2023 campaign.
