Mayfield spent his childhood in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and received his education at Catholic Central High School, where he participated in football and was a four-year starter at both offensive tackle and defensive end positions.
Mayfield made his initial commitment to play college football at Minnesota in February of his junior year; however, three months later, he changed his commitment to Michigan.
After finishing his senior year with 96 tackles, 31 tackles for loss, 17 sacks, and 3 fumble recoveries, he was honoured with the title of Defensive Player of the Year by The Grand Rapids Press.
He also participated in the United States Army All-American Bowl. As a true freshman, Mayfield saw action in three games at the left tackle position.
He was honoured with honourable mention All-Big Ten Conference honours after starting all 13 of Michigan’s games during his sophomore season after being named the starting right tackle for the Wolverines going into his sophomore season.
Mayfield made the announcement following the conclusion of the 2020 season that he would forego the remaining years of college eligibility he had and instead enter the 2021 NFL Draft.
