Castro attended Castro Valley High School and was a baseball player there. He was born in Castro Valley, California. He participated in the illustrious Coach Burns’ junior varsity basketball team at Castro Valley High School.



Castro played college baseball for the Stanford Cardinal as a student at Stanford University. In the first round (tenth overall) of the 2008 Major League Baseball draft, Castro was chosen by the Astros. In 2008, Castro debuted for the Tri-City ValleyCats in Single-A.

On June 7, 2009, he was given the opportunity to play for the Class AA Corpus Christi Hooks. Castro committed to moving back to Houston on January 22, 2021, by signing a two-year, $7 million contract.
