Castro played college baseball for the Stanford Cardinal as a student at Stanford University. In the first round (tenth overall) of the 2008 Major League Baseball draft, Castro was chosen by the Astros. In 2008, Castro debuted for the Tri-City ValleyCats in Single-A.
