For the 2009 All-Star Futures Game in St. Louis, Castro was chosen to represent the United States. After throwing out an infielder and hitting a three-run home run in the game, his performance was impressive.
In 2009, Baseball America placed him at number 53 on their list of the “Top 100 Prospects.” Because of this, he was sent back to Houston by the Astros after the Futures Game to rest up for the 2010 season.
From the Class AAA Round Rock Express, the Astros promoted Castro to the Major Leagues on June 20, 2010. It was against the San Francisco Giants on June 22 that he made his Major League Baseball debut.
It was his first professional at-bat, and he singled off of Tim Lincecum. On June 24, 2010, against Matt Cain, Castro hit his first major league home run.
While racing to first base in a spring training game against the Detroit Tigers on March 2, 2011, Castro suffered knee ligament damage.
To repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament and a damaged meniscus, he had surgery two days later on March 4. This led to his being sidelined for all of the 2011 season.
Castro’s groundout to Joaquin Arias on June 13, 2012, the final out of Matt Cain’s perfect game, came as a pinch-hitter for Xavier Cedeno. His batting average was .257 with six home runs and 29 RBIs in 87 games in 2012.
