Jason Joseph Foley (born November 1, 1995) is a Major League Baseball pitcher who pitches for the Detroit Tigers. In 2021, he debuted in Major League Baseball.
Foley appeared in six games with the Connecticut Tigers in 2016, mostly at the short-season single-A level, but he made a splash in 2017 with the West Michigan Whitecaps at the Class-A level.
Foley had a 1.55 ERA with five saves, 36 strikeouts to only five walks, and a WHIP of 0.86 across 18 appearances and 29 innings, allowing just five earned runs. At the end of the season, he was promoted to the Lakeland Flying Tigers, where he pitched 7.1 innings and gave up five runs. Foley, however, had Tommy John surgery prior to the 2018 season and did not play professionally for the whole year.
Prior to his operation, Foley was recognized for his velocity, topping 101 MPH on his fastball. When he returned to Lakeland in 2019, he lost velocity, but he was healthy for the whole season.
Foley was 3–3 with a 3.89 ERA in 36 bullpen appearances in 2019. With a WHIP of 1.43, he struck out slightly under one batter per inning.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Foley did not play in any professional games in 2020, but he was added to the Detroit Tigers’ alternate-site roster in Toledo in 2021, where players on the 40-man roster as well as those not on the roster (like Foley) played games to stay in shape. In addition, Foley enters the list at #30, following Casey Mize’s first appearance of the season and subsequent graduation from the Tigers’ MLB.com Top 30 Prospects rankings.
Foley’s contract was picked by the Tigers on June 6, 2021, and he was promoted to the majors for the first time. In nine appearances (ten innings thrown) with the Toledo Mud Hens, Foley had a 3.60 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, and 10 strikeouts. On that day, he made his MLB debut against the Chicago White Sox, tossing a scoreless inning of relief.
