Smith played for the Boston College Eagles from 2015 to 2018 for four seasons. With 73 receptions for 1,116 yards and 10 touchdowns, 906 yards and nine touchdowns on 143 carries, and 34 throws completed for 404 yards, six touchdowns, and three interceptions, he capped his undergraduate career with impressive numbers.
On April 27, 2019, Smith agreed to terms with the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent. He was released following the final roster cuts at the end of training camp, but the Jets then re-signed him to their practice squad on September 1, 2019.
On December 9, 2019, the Jets added Smith to their active roster. On December 12, 2019, Smith played against the Baltimore Ravens in his NFL debut, catching one ball for a total of 12 yards. The injured reserve was activated on December 17, 2019.
Smith was placed on injured reserve on September 7, 2020. Prior to Week 4, he was activated on October 1, 2020.
