A wide receiver with the New York Jets of the National Football League, Jeffrey Alan Smith II was born on April 21, 1997. At Boston College, he participated in collegiate football.
Smith played for Boston College’s Eagles from 2015 to 2018 for four seasons. Following an injury to starter Darius Wade, he started the final three games of the season at quarterback as a true freshman. In five games, he ran for 454 yards and six touchdowns while completing 27 of 82 throws for 253 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions.
Prior to his sophomore year, he switched to wide receiver and finished the season with 27 receptions for 395 yards and three touchdowns in addition to 199 yards on the ground and a score. Smith caught 25 catches for 296 yards as a junior while also rushing for 107 yards and a score, passing for two touchdowns on trick plays, and gaining a score on the ground.
In his senior year, Smith ran for 142 yards and scored caught 20 passes for 387 yards, and scored six touchdowns. He finished his undergraduate career with 73 receptions for 1,116 yards and 10 touchdowns, 906 yards and nine touchdowns on 143 carries, and 34 throws completed for 404 yards, six touchdowns, and three interceptions.
On April 27, 2019, Smith signed a non-drafted free agent contract with the New York Jets. He was released at the final roster cuts at the end of training camp, but the Jets re-signed him to their practice squad on September 1, 2019.
On December 9, 2019, the Jets elevated Smith to the team’s active roster. On December 12, 2019, against the Baltimore Ravens, Smith made his NFL debut, catching one ball for a total of 12 yards. On December 17, 2019, he was placed on an injured reserve.
Smith was put on injured reserve on September 7, 2020. Prior to Week 4 on October 1, 2020, he was activated. On April 19, 2021, Smith agreed to an exclusive rights free agent tender with the Jets.
