The New York Jets told reporters on Monday that Ruckert signed his first contract with the team. The Jets took Ruckert with the 101st pick in the third round of the draft.
As a child, Ruckert cheered for the New York Yankees, thus it was only natural that he sign the normal four-year rookie deal with the franchise.
Spotrac estimates that Ruckert’s deal is worth $5,044,908 with an $849,024 signing bonus based on where he was picked in the draft. The details of the deal were not made public.
According to the 247Sports Composite, Ruckert was a four-star prospect and the second-ranked tight end in the 2018 recruiting class.
At Lindenhurst High School in New York, he played wide receiver, but he was the right size and had the right skills to play tight end for the Scarlet and Gray after he committed to Ohio State.
Ruckert caught a 13-yard pass in his first game as a Buckeye, but that was the only pass he caught all year, even though he played in 12 of Ohio State’s 14 games. Ruckert was named an OSU Scholar-Athlete after his first year on the team.
Ruckert worked on his blocking skills between his freshman and sophomore years so that he could be on the field more often.
Consequently, he was rewarded with a starting role in all 14 games in 2019, when he was the team’s second-string tight end behind Luke Farrell.
Ruckert was on the field, but the Buckeyes didn’t use him much in their passing game. He only had 14 catches for 142 yards and four touchdowns that year. Ruckert was named an OSU Scholar-Athlete and Academic All-Big Ten again after the season was over.
