He touched 94 mph (151 kph) during his tryout with the Chicago organization, according to Cubs scout Manuel Esquivia, who also said that the organization saw him as a potential closer in the future.

After playing in the Dominican Summer League for two seasons, Romero was given a contract with the Cubs’ American League affiliates for the 2017 campaign.

He quickly advanced through the low minors, moving from the Arizona League Cubs to the Northwest League’s Eugene Emeralds for a brief period before concluding the campaign with the Midwest League’s South Bend Cubs.

He had the lowest ERA of all Cubs relief prospects that year (0.86), and his 0.62 WHIP was the lowest of all minor league pitchers across all three levels who pitched at least 25 innings.

Romero was promoted to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans of the Advanced-A Carolina League to start the 2018 campaign, and through the month of July, he has made 32 appearances with a 3.27 ERA and 1.30 WHIP.
