He began playing football at Edward W. Bok Technical High School during his sophomore year. He was selected for the city’s first honorable mention team in 2010 and 2011.

He attended the Globe Institute of Technology for two years following high school in an effort to improve his academics.

In 2013, he played in 7 games and had 26 tackles, including 3 for losses and 2 sacks. He transferred schools in 2014 and began playing NCAA football for the Fighting Illini at the University of Illinois.

He played both defensive end and defensive tackle while starting each of the 12 games during his senior year. 53 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 2 passes defensed, 1 forced fumble, and 1 fumble recovery were all included on his stats sheet.

He recorded 104 tackles, 4.5 sacks, 5 fumble recoveries, 3 forced fumbles, and 3 passes defensed in his last two seasons. The Oakland Raiders selected Ward with the 44th overall choice in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft.
