Musgrove was born in El Cajon, California, and began playing baseball when he was seven years old. During his junior year at Grossmont High School, he was a fantastic pitcher and batter, leading the team to two state championship appearances.

Musgrove, a first-round pick in the 2011 MLB Draft, has declined to sign with the Blue Jays. He had previously committed to San Diego State University to play baseball. Musgrove was traded to the Astros midway through the 2012 season as part of a ten-player deal.
