Joe Ross is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Washington Nationals of Major League Baseball (MLB). The San Diego Padres selected Ross in the first round of the 2011 Major League Baseball draft (25th overall). In 2015 Ross made his major league debut.
He struck out the next five Cubs he faced in his 1+23-inning appearance, throwing 24 pitches and hitting one batter while maintaining a fastball velocity of 95–96 mph, which is better than Ross’ pre-surgery velocity. He went 0-2 with a 5.06 ERA in three appearances in 2018.
He went 4–4 with a 5.48 ERA in 2019. In place of Max Scherzer, who was sidelined with a back ailment, Ross took the mound for the Nationals in the fifth game of the 2019 World Series.
As the Astros triumphed 7–1, he earned the loss after surrendering four runs in five innings of work. After the Nationals beat the Astros in seven games in the World Series, Ross was presented with a ring in recognition of his contributions.
Joe Ross did not participate in the COVID-19 pandemic-shortened 2020 season on June 29, 2020. Ross was placed on the disabled list on August 17, 2021, after sustaining a partial tear of his right elbow’s ulnar collateral ligament.
