To start against the Cubs at Target Field on Wednesday night, Rocco Baldelli has called up right-hander Joe Ryan from Triple-A St. Paul, reports the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Ryan, ranked sixth in the organization by MLB Pipeline, will be the first of Minnesota’s next generation of top pitching prospects to make their debuts in the majors.

The Minnesota Twins’ pitching staff could use Ryan’s assistance as they scramble to fill in the remaining innings of the season. Ryan’s presence should provide a much-needed boost to the staff.

“We’re excited to see him in action,” Baldelli added. “He’s been doing an excellent job with his ball placement. All year long, he’s been throwing the ball really well, everywhere he’s been.”

St. Paul Twins’ Triple-A affiliate, St. Paul, was slow to have a chance to see Ryan following the July 22 transaction that sent Nelson Cruz to Tampa Bay.

During Team USA’s silver-medal run at the Tokyo Olympics, the right-hander needed to finish out his stint as the ace and build back up to a full workload.
