Former Boise State tight end, John Bates is in his second season with the Washington Commanders. He joined the Commanders in the fourth round (124th overall) of the 2021 NFL Draft and signed a four-year rookie contract with them on May 13, 2021

Bates started his football career at Nyssa High School in Oregon, where he played his first two years before moving to Lebanon High School. He was a multi-sport athlete who also competed in basketball and track.

In his two years at Nyssa High, Bates was selected for The Oregonian’s second-team all-state. He also played as a utility player earning an All-Mid Willamette Valley Conference honors as a wide receiver, defensive back, and punter in 2014 and 2015.

Bates enrolled at Boise State University after high school and played college football for the Boise State Broncos between 2016 and 2020.

During his rookie year, he participated in all 14 of the team’s games and started twice. Bate hauled in three passes for a total of 34 yards, including all three receptions against Fresno State. Against the Bulldogs in the final game of the regular season, Bate grabbed two passes for 17 yards.
