For the Washington Commanders of the National Football League, John Bates is a tight end. He is 1.98 m tall and weighs 117 kg. He attended Nyssa for his first year of high school before transferring to Lebanon High School, where he played football. As a senior, he received three All-Legislative nods.

In 2014 and 2015, he earned All-MWVC honors for his wide receiver, defensive back, and punting performances. While a student at Boise State University, he participated in collegiate football for the Boise State Broncos team. He redshirted his true freshman year in 2016 and participated in all 14 games as a redshirt freshman in 2017. He started two games that season and caught three passes for a total of 34 yards.

He participated in 13 games as a redshirt sophomore in 2018, starting nine of them, and was named to the John Mackey Award Preseason Watch List. By the end of the season, he had accumulated 10 receptions for 155 yards and a touchdown. He started four of the five games he participated in as a redshirt senior in 2020, and he tied his career high with five catches.

After being chosen by the Washington Football Team with the 124th overall pick in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Bates signed his four-year rookie contract in May 2021. In a game in December 2021, he caught a pass from Kyle Allen and scored his first NFL touchdown on it after fumbling the pass, which he eventually recovered.
